Car has developed a wining noise associated with road speed, did think it was a bearing however have been advised that gearbox is the problem.
My options new one - not cost effective in my view (approx 1500 & vat plus fitting) when being realistic about value of car
second hand - any pointers or anyone know of one locally.
recon-anyone know of a company locally that could do it, drive in drive out option would be preferred
let it continue- hoping the noise does not increase or there is a total failure.
Any views or pointers.
Cheers

Firstly, have you checked the oil level in the 'box? Look at the bottom of it for evidence of a leak. _________________

Just an update, found and used http://www.manualgearboxrepairs.co.uk/ at Swansea in the end. New bearings fitted to gearbox as main bearing had collapsed. three day turnaround drive in and out job.
Nice to be able to drive without the radio blasting. Would have thought it should have lasted longer than 58K miles on a 2001 S40

450 +vat which I didn't find too OTT as it has cured the problem, which included bearings and labour.
It worked out far cheaper than the other option I was considering which was to buy a second hand box, and have that fitted. Cheapest one I could source was £385 delivered on top of which would be labour costs to remove and fit replacement.
At least with the option I have taken I know the history of the box and that new bearings are fitted.

Yes, manual gearbox repairs ,or 'John the box' as everyone knows him around here, is very good indeed. Nice guy and really knows gearboxes inside out.
I believe he may have called over to see me about parts for this car, but we couldn't help as we cant supply any internals for this box at all. _________________ My Car: C70 T5 GT Manual, RICA 304, ITG Air Filter, Strut Brace, Touch Screen DVD
