Model:s40
Year:2000
Engine:2.0 lpt
Auto/Manual:manual
Mileage (approx):99000
i have been advised my MAF is the cause of my engine woes.
The car iddles poorly - some times.
It is hesitant on accelerating - some times.
The engine management light goes on and off when it feels like it.
Can you offer any advice good people?

Could also be idle valve and/or throttle body needs cleaning.
If the lambda light keeps coming on, you should be able to get the codes read _________________

First of all; Thanks for replying to both my threads so quickly !
The codes were read and I was advised there were so damn many error codes in there that they would need to blank the lot and tackle them as they re-appear.
I went away with the engine management light off.
It came back on a few days later and she went back.
They say the error code was for the MAF, the only code in there this time...
Perhaps i need to get my 'haynes book of lies' out and set upon the idle valve and throttle body on the weekend. |

the other thing you can check for is a split boost hose or air leak, if the motors sucking in air after the maf sensor it comes up with a maf fault..as the lambda cant compensate for the extra air it throws a dicky fit whilst theyre off check on how much gunk is in the bores of the pipes if they're overly wet the recirc may be dumping dirty air into the air box and fouling the maf up..
i had this bother on my supra, everyone said it was the afm but it was a split vac pipe causing it _________________ purchasing manager in a local engineering firm |

When the car is idling poorly, unplug the MAF, you won't do any harm. If the car then starts to idle smoothly, you likely have your answer. If you replace it DO NOT, under ANY circumstance, buy a cheapo MAF off fleabay, they are f***ing useless. Get a genuine item, not from a Volvo dealer obviously as the prices are shocking, try these folks, decent prices and never heard of anyone having a problem with them....

depnds on how they work , some are cleanable, the mirror type is, but you need good quality brake cleaner ,, the type that dont dry to film, obviously a dirty mirror will give bad readings _________________ purchasing manager in a local engineering firm |

Well, I took my time but got around to checking the pipes and what-nots.
All look fine.
She has almost stopped the rough idle and hesitant acceleration but I am pricing a maf from emission logic just in case as it looks like I need to keep her for a year or two yet...
Cheers for the advice chaps. |
